NPR COMMISSIONS SUNNY JAIN TO COMPOSE & PREMIERE NEW PIECE. ‘100+ BPM’ TO BE PERFORMED BY HUNDREDS OF MUSICIANS ON THE STEPS OF THE BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY JUNE 21. JOIN US!

Red_Baraat_by_Stephen_WelshWe are delighted to announce that NPR has commissioned Red Baraat founder and bandleader Sunny Jain to compose and premiere a new piece of music as the capstone event for Make Music New York, on June 21st, on the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library.

This is the third commission by NPR Music pairing great composers and iconic locations — including a 2012 premiere of a new Phillip Glass composition in Times Square, New York.

For the occasion, Sunny Jain has created ‘100+ BPM’ which reflects Red Baraat’s mission of the profusion of joy and pluralism. According to Sunny, “The title carries a double entendre of tempo for the piece, beat per minute, and community building through music: Brooklyn Public Music.”

And what community building it will be! The piece will be played by Red Baraat, joined by over 200 brass and percussion players from all over the tri-state area, including the drumlines of the New York GiantsNew York Knicks and New York Jets, as well as members of the Asphalt OrchestraM.A.K.U. Soundsystem,Maracatu New York and several local marching bands. Better yet- YOU are welcome to join the playing and celebration. ‘100+BPM’ is available right here for download, and if you play, you should print it out, learn it, and join in the premiere. More details available right here

The performance will be recorded for a video that will premiere later this summer as part of our Field Recordings series.

RED BARAAT’S 2014 FESTIVAL OF COLORS ANNOUNCED // EXPANDS TO 4 CITIES

Red Baraat first Festival of Colors celebration happened in 2012 at a sold out Le Poison Rouge in New York City. Now in its third year, the event has expanded to four cities including New York; happening for the first time this year in Washington DC and New Orleans. The festival will return for the second time to Philadelphia. Each year Red Baraat curates a night of music and art. This year Red Baraat will be joined by Falu, the critically lauded singer whose take on Indian classical and folk music is entirely of the moment thanks to a captivating stage presence and killer live band. Mandeep Sethi is a California based MC and an active contributor to India’s blooming hip-hop scene. He may be familiar to Red Baraat fans after guesting with the band at Central Park Summerstage and at their San Francisco club shows. It is a diverse line up, celebrating and helping to expose South Asian artists working in a range of styles and mediums. Fans can expect a full set from Red Baraat at all shows. Check out how last year’s celebration at Webster Hall in New York went down.
